Regional Premier London and SE News - Wasps seal another Final - 9 Mar 2018 - Women's Football NewsCrawley Wasps 3 Parkwood Rangers 0
Crawley Wasps booked a return to the final of the London and South East Regional League Cup with a 3-0 victory over Parkwood at Steyning Town FC.
Runners-up to Leyton Orient last season, league leaders Wasps will look to go one better against AFC Phoenix in this season's edition.
Parkwood, themselves having a fine campaign, fourth in the league in their first season at this level. made Crawley work hard for their victory. but two goals around the seventy minute mark deservedly settled the outcome in Wasps' favour.
Crawley started brightly, Toni Smith shooting just wide in the first minute then Parkwood keeper Kelly Amer making the first of a series of fine saves to deny Ariana Fleischman in the third. Emily Vaughan was a constant threat to the Crawley defence. breaking clear on the right on six minutes, but no one could turn home her cross.
Mostly, however, the chances came and went at the other end. Fleuschman twice went close again, Faye Rabson was denied by Amer, then by an excellent tackle by Skye McNally. Crawley were playing some lovely football at this stage, Naomi Cole picking passes for fast breaking attackers and clever movement around the box releasing players in space. Parkwood defended strongly though and also caught Wasps players offside several times.
Rabson turned home a Cole through ball on the half hour but was denied by an offside flag. Amer saved well from Rabson again then sprang to her left to push a Cole 25-yard shot away for a corner. Smith was through on goal on 35 minutes but Amer raced from goal to block.
Having weathered the storm, Parkwood has a great chance to take the lead on 41 minutes. Vaughan was played in clear of the Wasps defence but keeper Frankle Gibbs was out well to block then save a follow up effort.
Right on the break, Wasps were awarded a penalty when Smith was adjudged to have been fouled and Cole converted the spot kick for a half time lead which rewarded their fluent work in the first 45 minutes.
The second half introduction of Kemina Webber gave Wasps a different threat in attack as a target for crosses. A first header hit the Parkwood bar on 50 minutes and it was Webber who eventually doubled the lead, converting a Charlie Carter cross with a precise 10-yard looping effort.
Prior to this, Parkwood had enjoyed their best attacking spell of the contest, forcing the Wasps defence into hurried clearances. The best chance fell to Corrie Goodhew when a corner was half cleared but her shot was wide on 63 minutes.
Webber set up the third Wasps goal on 74 minutes, rolling a pass for Rabson to fire home with a powerful rising 20 yard effort . With the outcome decided, Wasps saw out the match on the front foot but Parkwood defended well to keep the final deficit to three.
With a County Cup final to come this month, Crawley Wasps are still on course for a treble to mark an excellent season. Parkwood will achieve a highest ever finish having risen impressively from County League level over the past six seasons.
