England ease to comfortable win

England captain Steph Houghton scored twice as the Lionesses eased past Bosnia & Herzegovina to rack up their second successive victory in World Cup qualifying.

Mo Marley's side, who opened up their campaign to reach France 2019 with a 6-0 triumph over Russia in September, saw off Bosnia at the Banks's Stadium in Walsall to maintain their perfect start.

The visitors held firm for all of 19 minutes before Danielle Carter collected a short corner, wriggled free and lofted a cross into the box that Bosnian keeper Almina Hodzic failed to clear with a punch and Houghton was able to guide a header into the empty net for the opener.

Hodzic again failed to deal with a Nikita Parris cross shortly afterwards but atoned for this with a point blank save to deny Fran Kirby.

Toni Duggan twice came close to extending England's lead, first with a low strike from the edge of the area which hit the post and then another drive that flew inches wide.

As the first half came to a close, Kirby produced a 20-yard lob but Hodzic did well to turn the ball over the bar and keep her side in the game at the interval.

If Mo Marley's half time team talk had included urging them to score a quick second after the restart, she would have had the perfect response as just 42 seconds of play in the second half had elapsed when Duggan cut in and crossed for Parris to head in from close range.

England were now seeking further goals and did not have to wait too long when, after Carter was fouled on the edge of the area, Houghton stepped up to drill the resulting free kick into the corner for her second on the night.

Bosnia did get the ball in the net but Milena Nikolic's effort was ruled out for a foul and this was a rare effort on Siobhan Chamberlain's goal in what had been a one-sided match.

Duggan and Kirby both went close but England were to round off the scoring with eight minutes remaining, Carter latching onto Nobbs' pass in the area and being brought down by Amira Spahic for a penalty. Kirby duly send Hodzic the wrong way from the spot to complete a comfortable win and set England up for Tuesday night's clash with Kazakhstan in Colchester.
