Champions make winning start
Women's Football Wales Premier League News - 12 Sep 2017

Swansea City began their defence of the Orchard Welsh Premier Women's League title with a 4-0 victory against newly promoted Caldicot Town.

The first half was goalless but eight minutes after the restart, Stacey John-Davis broke Caldicot's resistance and gave Swansea the lead. Jodie Passmore quickly added a second and the Swans went on to add further goals through Emma Beynon and Katy Hosford.

Abergavenny Women built on their opening day victory by beating Rhyl Ladies 5-1 and this sees them occupy top place by virtue of having scored more goals. Rhyl had started the season with a win by the same margin but found themselves three behind at the break, Maxine Mudge netting twice and Amy Thrupp the other in the ten minute spell leading up to half time. Gabi Hughes extended Abergavenny's lead after the break and although Rebecca Bannister reduced the arrears for the home side, Lauren Boyd rounded off the scoring with six minutes remaining.

Cardiff City meanwhile won 3-0 away to Llandudno Ladies and join Abergavenny on the same number of points, with the same goal difference. Danielle Broadhurst broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time and Shannon Evans rounded off the scoring with a brace in a four minute spell, just before the hour mark.

Cardiff Met Ladies were another team to commence their season a week late and they also opened up with a win, 3-2 at Port Talbot Town. Rebecca Mathias and Naomi Clipston ensured that the Archers were two ahead at half time and Clipston netted what proved to be a decisive third, despite Port Talbot launching a spirited fightback which saw Courtney Thomas and Carys Davies give them late hope of salvaging a point.

Cyncoed Ladies notched up their first points of the season when winning 3-1 away to Caernarfon Town. Caernarfon started well in their first home match back in the league and took the lead through Catrin Thomas, with Athina Varnava equalising six minutes ahead of half time. After the break, Fern Burrage put Cyncoed ahead for the first time and Jess Williams wrapped up the points, nine minutes from time.
