English County and other Leagues News - St Nicholas have success in Reserve - 13 May 2017 - Women's Football News

A memorable season has just come to an end for St Nicholas Reserves which has seen them carry off the Gloucestershire County Women's League title as well as reaching the County Cup Final and the semi finals of the Gordon Perrett Memorial Cup, losing narrowly on each occasion.

Indeed, over the entire course of the season, the team were not beaten in open play over 90 minutes.

Kevin Cooper took over the position as manager last summer and he is understandably delighted with the way things have gone. "This is my first season in management, having spent the past twelve years with our first team," Kevin told Women's Soccer Scene. "I took over the reserve side in the summer with a plan and a style of play. Malcolm Soper was the existing manager when I took over and I was pleased as punch when he agreed to become my assistant for this season.

"We talked in great lengths about the team's weaknesses and what we could do to change the mentality as well and increasing the belief and the drive and I have been overjoyed at the response. I decided to change the club captain and gave the armband to Charlotte Davis, who with Chelsea Pearce as the vice captain, have been superb as both have taken on new roles in the team and i really could not be prouder of both of them.

"We have two of the most prolific goalscorers in the division with Becky Rexworthy netting 24 goals and Poppy Coles close behind with 22. These two have been awesome up front and have shown the desire to do what the team has been set up to do and that is score goals, and with others like Lauren Ellis scoring some important goals, we have achieved what we set out to achieve.

"We said at the start of pre-season that we were setting our goals as high as we believed possible and I for one never doubted what this group could achieve if they set their minds to it and we agreed - nothing short of Champions, second was failure. The other goal was to progress as far as we could in one of the cup competitions that we were entered into. Well, we reached the final of the first Cup and drew 1-1 with Cheltenham Town, who are three leagues above us, but lost 6-5 on penalties. We also reached the semi finals Gordon Perrett Cup but lost a close game 2-1 to Almondsbury UWE after extra time.

"Even though we reached the final of the County Cup, I believe the best game was the semi final of the same cup, where we were up against our own first team and we came out 4-1 winners. The whole group, those in the squad and those not, worked so hard to achieve what we did on that afternoon and proved just how far we have progressed this season..

"I believe in setting out goals each season and the next one will be no different, we will need to strengthen and and hopefully work much closer with our first team as possible. We have a fantastic female section at St Nicholas and we will be looking to make it even better in the future, our ladies first team are the flagship of the female section and we are all massively proud of their achievements."
