Despite a great effort, Wales under-19 were beaten 4-1 by France in the opening match of their UEFA Under-19 Championship qualifying group in Portugal.
Wales got off to a superb start and took a 19th minute lead through Emma Plewa but they were disrupted after a facial injury to defender Jasmin Dutton which required her to leave the field and attend the local hospital. The good news is that her injury was not serious.
The French came back strongly in the second half and scored four times, the result leaving them as firm favourites to win the group and qualify for this summer's Finals in Belarus.
Wales meet Azerbaijan in their second group match in Agueda on Saturday.
Wales: Sophie Dando, Alicia Powe, Nia Jones, Jasmin Dutton (sub Annie Pritchard 35mins), Yasmin Leung, Rachel Cullen, Sophie Ingle, Ellie Davies (sub Sara Hilton 77mins), Emma Plewa, Emily Brown, Sharla Passiarello. Subs not used: Yvette Churchill, Lyndsey Davies, Mikaela Welford, Cori Williams.
