Fairlop Oak Powerleague was the venue for the Essex County FA's very first Ladies Sevens Competition, which was staged to celebrate the development of various new beginners' teams throughout the County and its surrounding London Boroughs.
Over the past six months, the ECFA have set up and supported various female taster sessions which remain ongoing in both Havering and Newham, with the idea to provide adult females with a flexible format of football which has so far comprised weekly training sessions and one-off friendlies.
Five teams attended the two-hour event which included 'round robin' games along with a final for the first and second placed sides. Havering United pipped Newham's Flanders to the post with a 2-1 victory in the Final and the same team scooped the tournament's Fair Play Award for their sportsmanship throughout the evening. Havering had two sides at the event, with Flanders, Women United and Greenwich Ladies also represented.
ECFA Girls' & Women's Development Officer Sharon Brownlie, summarised: "I am extremely pleased with the success of the first event and it was great to see so many women enjoying the game and playing it with such competitiveness. My original expectations were easily surpassed and I hope now that we can make this a regular event to keep on providing playing opportunities for those women that can not commit to playing regular Sunday 11 v 11 football for various commitment reasons such as work and family."
With further beginners sessions now planned for Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest, the ECFA are seeking interested females looking to take part in the fun, as well as volunteers or coaches who would benefit from getting involved in helping to support and deliver current and upcoming sessions.
