Brentwood Town Ladies' tenth summer tournament was a huge success despite the damp weather on Sunday.
Nearly 100 women's and girls teams competed in eight groups with an impressive standard set in every competition. Teams came from all over Essex and as far afield as Kent, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and London.
The largest age group was the senior women which had 30 teams competing in six groups and maintained its reputation as being one of the hardest fought small-sided competitions in eastern England.
The tournament was part of the Brentwood Festival of Sport and was supported during the afternoon by the Mayor of Brentwood Frank Kenny, himself a qualified referee who has officiated at the tournament in previous years.
"This tournament shows that women's football is thriving despite sensational headlines about some professional clubs pulling out of the women's leagues," said Brentwood Town Ladies Club President David Worsfold. "At grass roots level, girls and women are taking up the game in increasing numbers and with huge enthusiasm. We saw that passion and commitment in the rain at the Brentwood Centre on Sunday.
"At Brentwood Town we will have more teams than ever next season and are still recruiting players in every age group. We are proud to play our part in giving the women's game a great platform and thank all the teams who came today for their part in making it such a successful showcase for the female game."
