It was awesome - penalty hero Jodie

It was awesome - penalty hero Jodie - 9 Dec 2005 - Women's Football NewsJodie Portingale revealed that she was not suffering from nerves when scoring the decisive penalty for Frome Town in their F.A.Women's Cup Third Round victory over Hereford Pegasus.

The Somerset side are into the last 32 for the first time in their history and are the only Regional League team through to that stage, but they were pushed all the way by their West Midlands League opponents in a gruelling but exciting match.

"Fabulous, it was awesome," smiled Jodie when asked about her winning penalty. "Nothing was going through my head to be honest, I knew what I was going to do with it because I had done it so many times. I wasn't nervous, because I knew where I wanted to put it, and it happened."

Jodie appeared as a second half substitute after returning from several weeks out with an injury and she admitted it was not easy in the heavy conditions. "It was very tough, it wasn't a very good quality pitch as it was boggy and the ball was very slow, and you had to run so much harder," she said. "It's hard to get into the game when you come on as a substitute but I was more fired on when coming on and I was very determined."

Carla German netted two of Frome's goals in the 3-3 draw which resulted beforehand, which included an equaliser in the dying minutes. "It was a thrilling game, I never thought it would go to this length," she said. "To score the equaliser in the last seconds of extra time was fantastic, I'm sure it made the girls very happy as well," she said.

"I don't like to say it and never gave in but I definitely thought the game was over and to take the opportunity of getting the equaliser was wonderful. It was a great day for me, one of the most important (goals) and it was special.

"I had faith in Jodie (to score the penalty). She has just come back from an injury and did a fantastic job when she came on and to score the winning penalty for the team - what an achievement."

Frome have since learned that they will play away to either Preston North End or Stockport County but, at the time of asking, Jodie was in no doubts as to her side's dream draw. "Arsenal at home," she replies. "The crowd would be amazing, you never get a chance to play against the top teams and this could be our chance."
