Jessica battles back from serious injury
 Women's Football News 28 Jun 2005
Jessica battles back from serious injury - 28 Jun 2005 - Women's Football NewsJessica Cousins had a happy ending to her season after it seemed to have ended prematurely following a serious injury.
The 16-year-old striker eventually made her comeback at the end of the season and it was a double celebration for Jessica as her team, Gravesham Ladies, won promotion from the Kent Division of the South East Counties League.
"This season was the first season for us," Jessica told Women's Soccer Scene. "The ladies team and the under-15s combined to make a full team due to the loss of players from both sides at the end of the season before."
Gravesham were among the promotion places for most of the campaign but disaster was to strike for Jessica midway through the season. "Unfortunately, just before Christmas I had an accident playing football which resulted in a trip to the hospital," she says. "They confirmed that I had torn ligaments in my foot and ankle and damaged the tissue completely.
"I was out of football for nearly four months so I believe the injury was fairly bad. But the girls did excellently without me!" she laughs. "I am very proud of the team as we came third in the table and gained promotion to the league above."
Jessica was able to return for the end of the season and is aiming to be ready in time for September. "I have found it a bit hard to get back to full fitness and I'm not quite sure if I still am 'right'," she admits, "but I visited a private physio a few times and still do the exercises he taught me to make my ankle and foot stronger."
Gravesham will also be gearing up for life in a higher division next season and Jessica is convinced that they can acquit themselves well. "I have every faith!" she says. "Even if we do struggle, I know everyone will have tried their best!"
