Villa first team triumph over reserves
 Women's Football News 26 Mar 2004
Vanessa hoping for third time lucky - 14 Mar 2004 - Women's Football NewsThe Central Warwickshire Girls League's Under 12 Open Cup Final produced an unusual occasion this season, an "in house" affair between Aston Villa and Aston Villa reserves! The two teams met on Saturday and it was the first team who added to their Premier Division Championship by running out 4-0 winners in a good, well fought game.
On a blustery day where the wind played its part, the first team forced the first chance of the game when Robyn James brought out a save from Amy Beckett. The pattern of the game continued with the reserves having to do most of the defending but good work from Charlotte Byrne and Jermima Male helped keep chances to a minimum. Megan Wilton went close with a shot touched on to the post by Beckett but the First Team finally broke through shortly before half time when Emily Hanson, who had looked dangerous throughout the half, received a short corner and cut in before burying her shot into the corner of the net.
The score remained 1-0 at half time but the advantage was doubled within five minutes of the restart. The reserves defence were unable to clear a Hanson free kick and Robyn James applied the finish from the loose ball. Needing to find a way back into the game, the reserves tried to press with Jade Richards and Stacey Coleman working tirelessly in midfield but they could not break down a strong First Team defence and a decisive blow was struck when Emily Hanson made her way towards the edge of the area where she powered home a shot for her second goal. Now the first team were
controlling matters against a tired reserves, and Katie Smith added the fourth for Ian Badger's team.
So Aston Villa's first team's domination at this level has been completed with two trophies but the reserves, beaten for the first time in 17 months, still have much to play for. They still lead Division One and have another crack at a Cup Final this week when they take on Redditch Utd under-11s in the League Cup Final.
